If you follow us on social media and have seen the gorgeous images from our vintage hen parties, you will know that we are suckers for a perfectly lined eye. Sultry, sexy, simple or slick; however you wear it, eyeliner has the ability to transform your look. Whilst beauty trends have changed over the years, eyeliner has never gone out of style. From Egypt’s Cleopatra to the Hollywood stars of today, no red carpet look is complete without a perfectly lined eye.

Whilst we are first in line to preach the benefits of a winged eye, we’re also first to admit that getting the look right isn’t always plain sailing. After transforming countless hens, chicks and brides into vintage vixens, we’ve picked up a trick or two along the way. With this in mind, we decided to share our top ten tips for applying eyeliner like a pro.

Choose your look

The liner you use will be decided by the overall look you are going for. Feeling sultry? Use a kohl pencil liner to create a smoky and sexy look. Prefer the tried-and-tested classic cat eye? You’ll need a liquid or gel liner.

White out

White eyeliner can be used for several purposes. Slicking it across your entire lid will provide a great base for eyeshadow, particularly if you want a bold colour to stand out even more. Alternatively, use yours to line the lower waterline, opening up your eyes and making them appear bigger.

Dot-to-dot

If you seriously struggle to create a fluid line, try the dot-to-dot approach instead. Use your liner to make dots along your lash line, before connecting them together to create a perfect line.

Get resourceful

Odd flicks are the bane of liner fans around the world. Make yours match by getting resourceful, using the edge of a spoon or bank card to create flicks that are identical on each eye. Or raid the First Aid box for micropore tape, our secret weapon!

Go back

If you find getting your liner flicks to finish at the same point a challenge, try drawing your wings from the outside in, working towards the eye rather than away from it. This method helps create a much neater line too.

Make do

If you’re going from desk to bar, eyeliner is a must to take your look from office to hottie. If you’ve only got a mascara with you, simply use a small brush to take some product from the wand and use as liner.

Be subtle

A more subtle daytime look can be created using brown or grey liner, rather than black; great for the ‘no make-up look’ we all try to achieve for every day.

Clean up operation

Vaseline or make-up remover can be a life saver for those who really cannot nail their liner technique. If all other methods fail, very roughly line the eye and clean up the look with a cotton bud soaked in either Vaseline or remover. Don’t try this if you have spent 20 minutes creating the perfect smoky eyeshadow as all your hard work will be ruined!

Get Sixties sexy

Create a bambi-like look by combining both liquid liner and pencil. Create the perfect feline flick on your top lashes, before lining your lower waterline with a deep, dark black pencil. Add some falsies and you’ve got the Brigitte Bardot look.

Get set

Don’t let all your hard work go to waste! Whatever liner look you have opted for, setting it with translucent pressed powder will stop it sliding onto your lids at first blink.
