Summer’s Vintage Festivals For Gals And Guys

We LOVE a vintage festival. The fellas? Not so much. While there isn’t much that gets us as excited as the prospect of an entire weekend filled to the brim with clothes and cake, the same can’t be said for the men in our lives. Until you mention classic cars. With little more than the rev of an engine and the polish of a hood (oo-er!) their heads are turned and your hours of unadulterated vintage pleasures are there for the taking.

Here are the ‘his and hers’ vintage festivals on our radar this summer.

12-13 August 2017

Firle Park

Now in its fifth year, Firle Vintage Fair sees the Sussex countryside overtaken by vintage lovers and classic car enthusiasts. The crème de la crème of vintage exhibitors showcase their wares, with everything from interiors and fashion to food on offer. Indulge in a wild food workshop or get crafty in a flower crown making class, tap a toe to a Lindy Hop troupe and cool off with an iced sloe gin on the lawn. There’s no better way to spend an August afternoon. The vintage car enthusiasts can tyre kick to their heart’s content, with more than 200 classic cars showcased over the weekend. As if that wasn’t enough, the after party goes on into the early hours on Friday and Saturday in the Night Garden, where music, dancing and dinner under the stars is followed by camping in tepees.

19 – 20 AUGUST

Sywell Aerodrome

If you were born to hand jive baby, the Atomic Festival will be right up your street. This festival of all things 50’s has his and hers written all over it. There’s a beauty parlour and barber shop, plus a tattooist in an Airstream trailer for souvenirs that’ll last a lot longer than a fresh haircut or red lip. There are free dance classes too. Grab your partner and get practising and you could shake, rattle and roll your way to a place in the UK Rock ‘n Roll Jive Championships and a £250 cash prize. Adrenaline junkies will appreciate the Wall of Death, complete with 1920’s motorcycles, plus drag strip racing with the Vintage Hot Rod Association. You can even race your own classic car.

8 – 10 September 2017

Goodwood Motor Circuit

We were lucky enough to be invited to tend the tresses of several Goodwood Revival girls and dapper chaps last year and we’re hoping for more of the same this summer!

Delve into the dressing up box because looking the part is part and parcel of attending Goodwood Revival. Relive the glamour of Goodwood Motor Circuit’s Golden Era of Motorsport at the only historic race meet to be staged entirely in period dress. Which period you choose is entirely up to you – 40’s, 50’s or 60’s – but be warned that in the words of Goodwood themselves “the sartorial element of the Goodwood Revival has become as important as the cars on the track”. Whether you’re more wiggle chick or land girl, be prepared to put the work in; the judges in the best-dressed competition are extremely particular and everything from your shoes to your pearl necklace and your neck tie are up for assessment if you’re to scoop a place on the best-dressed list.

With priceless classic cars thrown around one of the most famous race tracks in the world, this is one that will seriously appeal to the man in your life.
