Ask us to choose our favourite celebrity wedding style in recent years and you can bet your bottom dollar that the answer would be a vintage inspired number. From Victoriana to 1920s, Fifties-style cinched waists and 1970s Woodstock influences; we never met a vintage wedding gown we didn’t like (except perhaps some of those from the Eighties – puff sleeves anyone?). Here are some of our favourite vintage celebrity wedding looks to help inspire your own style on the big day.
When Les Misérables star Anne Hathaway was married in a sunset ceremony in California’s Big Sur, we couldn’t get enough of her vintage look. Her custom Valentino gown was given an added edge with a blush ombre effect through the lengths of the tulle skirt, while her gorgeous pixie crop hairstyle was accessorised with a darling vintage headband and intricately embroidered full-length veil. If you ever needed proof that the big day needn’t mean long locks, Anne Hathaway is your girl!
The catwalk queen’s marriage to rocker Jamie Hince might not have gone the distance but we will remain forever faithful to Kate Moss’s vintage wedding day style. The silk-satin gown, designed by close friend John Galliano, stole the show at the Cotswolds nuptials, and the bias-cut gave a definite nod to the sleek styles of the 1920s. Just in case anyone had doubted Ms Moss’s vintage inspirations, her wedding day look was completed with a stunning Juliet veil complete with intricate embroidery and a smattering of golden sequins.
When Park Avenue princess Olivia Palermo tied the knot to her absurdly good looking boyfriend, we expected acres of tulle and at least a tiara or two. In reality, the fashion maven looked towards the fabulous fifties for inspiration, opting for a sweet three-piece Carolina Herrera outfit. Olivia’s simple cream cashmere sweater was worn with white shorts (yes, shorts!), but it was the full tulle skirt overlay with cinched waist, high leg split and pretty floral embroidery that really caught our attention and confirmed her vintage intentions. A centre-parted ponytail and soft romantic makeup completed her perfectly preened and pretty look, with Carrie Bradshaw’s iconic bejewelled Manolo Blahnik pumps serving as her something blue.
We had high hopes when society sweetheart Poppy Delevingne tied the knot and neither of the two vintage-inspired gowns she wore to celebrate her nuptials let us down. First up was an ultra-feminine custom Chanel Couture gown with floral beading, cap sleeves and a sheer beaded underskirt that the bride removed later in the night to show off those perfect pins; something to think about if the thought of your wedding dress lingering in your loft after the big day fills you with sadness!
A second star-studded ceremony in Marrakesh saw Poppy embrace the hippy vibes of the 1970s in an ethereal gown by Emilio Pucci, said to have been inspired by an Ossie Clark original from way back when. A lace-up tunic top and pretty floral embroidery added to the Woodstock vibes, with the detachable full skirt making another appearance in preparation for hours spent dancing in the desert.
American actress Lake Bell popped up on our radar after her side-splitting appearance alongside Simon Pegg in Brit-flick Man Up, and we had a sneaky suspicion that a kooky character like Lake wasn’t going to go down the traditional route when it came to her wedding dress. That said, we couldn’t have imagined how gorgeous her Great Gatsby-inspired Marchesa gown would end up being on the big day, complete with fringing, intricate beading and a detachable skirt that proved very handy when she hopped on the back of a motorbike at the end of the night!
